FROM ALCALÁ TO THE LOUVRE
Alcalá is a beautiful Andalusian-style town, with steep, whitewashed streets leading to wide squares, declared a Historic Site. It forms part of the Ruta del Toro (Bull Route). Alcalá de los Gazules is a good starting point for exploring the Alcornocales Nature Reserve, an ideal setting for active tourism activities (hiking, canoeing, cycle touring, horse riding, etc.). In its interior it is very interesting to go on an excursion to the Aljibe mountain range, to climb to its highest peak from where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views. There is an abundance of roe deer, deer and different species of birds, vultures and Bonelli's eagles, among other species.
Very close to the town is the El Picacho recreational area, which has a nature classroom, camping area and hostel. Of the fortifications from the Middle Ages, the castle keep (13th to 16th centuries), some sections of the wall and the Puerta de la Villa gate have been preserved. In the Plaza de San Jorge, better known as Plaza Alta, we find the main parish church of San Jorge and the Casa del Cabildo. Of great interest are, in addition to its fountains of Arab origin, the wells of Arriba, Enmedio and Abajo, the convent of Santa Clara, the former convent of Santo Domingo and the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Santos, where a popular pilgrimage is held every year.
